Design Systems Explained: Why Growing Products Need One
What a design system is, what it includes and when it's worth investing in one for your product.
As a product grows, small inconsistencies multiply: five shades of blue, three button styles, spacing that changes from screen to screen. A design system solves this by giving designers and developers one shared source of truth.
What is a design system?
A design system is a collection of reusable decisions and components, documented so anyone on the team can use them. It usually has three layers:
- Design tokens — the basic values: colors, typography, spacing, radius, shadows.
- Components — buttons, inputs, cards, modals and navigation built from those tokens.
- Guidelines — when and how to use each component, plus tone of voice and accessibility rules.
Why it matters
Faster design and development
Instead of designing every screen from scratch, teams assemble them from tested building blocks. New features ship faster.
Consistency users can feel
A consistent interface is easier to learn and feels more trustworthy. Users notice when things behave the same way everywhere.
Better accessibility
Build accessibility into components once — contrast, focus states, keyboard support — and every screen benefits.
Easier collaboration
Designers and developers share the same names and rules. Fewer handoff questions, fewer surprises.
When should you invest?
You don't need a full design system for a first prototype. Signs it's time:
- More than one designer or several developers work on the product.
- You're building for both web and mobile.
- The same components are being rebuilt in slightly different ways.
- Rebranding or redesigning feels like a huge, risky project.
Start small
A useful design system doesn't have to be big. Start with tokens and the ten components you use most, document them in Figma and in code (for example with Storybook), and grow from there.
A design system is a product that serves your product. Treat it like one: keep it simple, use it daily, improve it over time.
